INDUSTRY

Eastern Bohemia's major industrial centres include: Hradec Kralove, Pardubice, Jicin, Trutnov, Usti nad Orlici, Nachod, Chrudim, Havlickuv Brod, Vrchlabi, and Dvur Kralove nad Labem.

The region's most important industries are engineering (heavy engineering, engines, machinery for the chemical, textile, and food industries, and agricultural machines); automobiles; the chemical, electrical, and energy industries; and electronics. Also important are the textile, leather, and fur industries and the sugar, canning, dairy, sweets, and meat industries.

Eastern Bohemia contains deposits of black coal, pyrite, copper ores, manganese, uranium, glass sands, and building materials.

Agricultural production varies with the climate of individual areas. With almost 700,000 hectares of arable land and over 300,000 hectares of forests, the region's agricultural production concentrates on grain, potatoes, sugar beet, flax, rape-seed, fruit, and vegetables. Live-stock production focuses on cattle, pig, sheep, and poultry.

Eastern Bohemia has developed three socio-economic areas:

1. The Hradec-Pardubice area, which includes the Hradec Kralove and Pardubice districts and parts of the Jicin, Nachod, Rychnov nad Kneznou, and Chrudim districts, is located along the Labe river. The town of Hradec Kralove is one of the country's most important centres as its engineering industry generates more than one tenth of the region's gross industrial production. Hradec Kralove is also a base for the chemical, wood-processing, glass, textile, garment, and food industries. As an educational centre, Hradec Kralove hosts the medical and pharmaceutical faculties of Charles University. The area's second most important centre, Pardubice, is known for its chemical industry.

2,3. The Krkonose and Orlicke Mountains and the area containing part of the Bohemian and Moravian Highlands are known mainly for their scenic attractions.

TOURISM

Eastern Bohemia's most touristed areas include the Krkonose Mountains and the northern end of the Jeseniky mountain range. Also popular are the Orlicke Mountains, Czech Paradise, and the natural rock formations concentrated in the Adrspasske and Teplicke skaly. Several towns, including Hradec Kralove, Pardubice, Jicin, Litomysl, and Nove Mesto nad Metuji, are touristed for their well-preserved Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance architecture.
